Atletico accuse La Liga referees of bias after Barcelona defeat

Atletico Madrid have formally raised concerns over refereeing standards following their 2-1 La Liga defeat to Barcelona, questioning what they describe as inconsistencies in decision-making.

The flashpoint came when referee Busquets Ferrer initially issued a red card to Barcelona defender Gerard Martin, only to downgrade it to a yellow after a VAR review.

The decision has triggered frustration within Atletico, who believe the change directly influenced the outcome of the match.

According to reports, the club has now requested clarification from Spain’s Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) over what it sees as a “different standard” being applied.

Club sources were quoted as saying: “It’s impossible to compete when certain rules are explained to you, but then different ones are applied.”

Allegations of inconsistency

Atletico’s concerns extend beyond a single incident. Officials argue that similar refereeing inconsistencies have affected them in consecutive matches, including fixtures against Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The club also expressed concern over the role of VAR, suggesting its intervention is creating further confusion rather than supporting on-field officials.

“They believe the VAR officials are harming their colleagues,” reports indicated, with Atletico calling for greater alignment in decision-making processes.

Simeone backs club stance

Manager Diego Simeone has publicly supported the club’s position, urging authorities to provide a clear explanation of the incident involving Martin.

Despite their frustration, Atletico officials have maintained that they respect referees, distancing themselves from more extreme accusations seen elsewhere in Spanish football.

Pressure on officiating standards

The episode adds to ongoing scrutiny surrounding officiating in La Liga, particularly regarding VAR consistency.

For Atletico, the priority is clarity and uniform application of rules as the title race intensifies.
