Atiku says his son’s defection to APC is a personal choice, pledges support for Tinubu

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described his son, Abba Abubakar’s decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a personal choice, saying it does not reflect any family disagreement or political tension.

Abba Abubakar joins APC amid political realignment

Speaking in a statement shared on X on Thursday, Atiku said, “The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming, even when family and politics intersect.”

Abba Abubakar, popularly known as “Abba,” officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC on Thursday at the National Assembly in Abuja.

He was formally received by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside APC leaders from the North-East geopolitical zone.

At the event, Abba announced his resignation from the PDP and pledged to work for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

With this development, I will work with Senator Barau to actualise the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu come 2027. To this effect, I’m directing all coordinators of my association to join the APC and work for President Tinubu,” he said.

Atiku stresses governance over family politics

Atiku, however, stressed that his primary concern remains governance and the state of the nation.

What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people,” he said, adding, “I remain resolute in working with like-minded patriots to restore good governance and offer Nigerians a credible alternative.”

Abba’s defection also included the renaming of his political network from the Haske Atiku Organisation to the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, signalling full alignment with the ruling party.
