“At 71, I regret not leaving when I was 52” — man recounts pain of staying after wife’s long-term infidelity

A 71-year-old man has shared a deeply emotional account of regret after choosing to remain in a marriage he says was built on years of infidelity.
Man’s painful reflection on betrayal and delayed decisions
The man, whose identity was not disclosed, revealed that he discovered at age 52 that his wife had been unfaithful throughout their entire marriage.
Despite the shock, he chose to stay, citing family responsibilities and fear of starting over at what he believed was an advanced age.
“I was 52 when I found out my wife had been cheating all through our marriage. She begged, we cried, and I stayed. I told myself we were too old to start again. We had children and even grandchildren. I thought walking away would destroy everything we built,” he said.
Regret grows with time
However, nearly two decades later, the man says that decision has become his greatest regret.
According to him, the emotional wounds never healed, and the relationship remained strained despite efforts to move forward.
His story echoes similar accounts documented in past relationship studies, including a 2018 global survey which found that unresolved betrayal often leads to long-term emotional distress in marriages.
“Now I am 71, and I know I was wrong. I never got over it. Not even close. I live every day wondering what my life could have been if I had walked away at 52. Maybe I wouldn’t have found love again, but I wouldn’t be this miserable,” he added.
