“At 17, my mum asked if I was…” – Lady shares how her rare bond with her mother shaped her life

A Nigerian lady has warmed hearts online after sharing the beautiful and honest relationship she has with her mother, revealing how open conversations shaped her life.
In a viral video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she recounted how their bond started when she was 17, just about to leave for university, when her mum handed her a heartfelt letter.
In her words, she said:
“When I was 17, my mum wrote me a letter. I was packing for school when she slipped a folded paper into my hand and told me to read it later. I was curious and read it immediately. The summary was that she didn’t just want to be my mother, she wanted to be my friend.”
She explained that the letter marked the beginning of a strong friendship, where she felt safe sharing everything about her life, including relationships and personal struggles.
The lady also recalled how her mother openly discussed sensitive topics with her, including virginity and personal values, in a way that shaped her mindset.
“My mum once asked me if I was a virgin. I told her yes. She then told me that keeping it doesn’t guarantee respect from a man or a perfect marriage. She said I should do it because I want to please God, not because of any man. That my virginity is not for my husband,” she added.
She further revealed that her mother guided her through important aspects of womanhood and remained her first point of contact during major life moments, including relationship challenges.
Her heartfelt revelation has sparked reactions online.
One user wrote, “I wish I had this kind of bond with my mom.” Another shared, “My mom gave me advice like this too, but I never appreciated it.”

At 17 my mum asked me if i was still a v!rgin, I said yes because of cause I was still a v!rgin as at that time, but my mum asked me why? Hope it’s not that I have the mentality of keeping for my husband, marrying a virgin doesn’t mean a man is going respect you, just make sure… pic.twitter.com/dVOGwmHkaW
