Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Asake has been named the most-streamed artist on Spotify in Nigeria, according to figures released by the streaming platform.
The announcement coincides with Spotify’s celebration of five years of operations in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana.
“Celebrating 5 years of Spotify in Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana, powered by you,” the company said in a statement.
Dominating the Nigerian charts
Asake topped a list that included major Nigerian stars such as Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, and Seyi Vibez. His hit track “Remember” emerged as the most-streamed song in Nigeria, while “Lonely at the Top” also secured a position among the top five tracks.
The platform credited listeners for driving its expansion, revealing that Nigerian users have created over 25 million playlists over the past five years.
The average Nigerian listener is 26 years old, highlighting the influence of a youthful, digital-savvy audience.
A unique sound and viral reach
Asake’s popularity has been fuelled by his distinctive fusion of street pop, mainstream Afrobeats, and energetic dance tracks that have gone viral on platforms like TikTok.
His album “Lungu Boy” made history as the first African project to top the global Spotify debut chart, further cementing his status as a leading figure in Afrobeats.
With Spotify’s growth in the region, Asake’s recognition underlines the rising global influence of Nigerian music and the continued dominance of Afrobeats on digital platforms.
