Arokodare earns Ajax coach’s praise after impressive league debut
Tolu Arokodare made an immediate impact on his Eredivisie debut as Ajax began their 2026/27 campaign with a 2-0 victory over PEC Zwolle on Sunday.
The Nigerian striker came off the bench in the 73rd minute and needed only three minutes to influence the game, helping create the opening goal as Ajax secured a winning start under head coach Míchel Sánchez.

Arokodare makes instant impact
With the game still goalless when Arokodare entered the field, the 25-year-old quickly provided Ajax with a physical presence in attack.
He played an important role in the move that resulted in Jorthy Mokio breaking the deadlock just moments after his introduction.
Julian Brandt later doubled Ajax’s advantage to seal the three points, with Sánchez’s substitutes making a significant contribution after being introduced.
The coach was particularly impressed by Arokodare’s performance and believes the forward can benefit from regular football following a difficult spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
“Especially Tolu. He did exceptional work and I am very happy for him because he needs to regain his rhythm. His first minutes were very good. He made a good move leading to the goal. Mokio came on and scored. The same goes for Brandt,” Sánchez said, as quoted by Ajax Showtime.

Sánchez also praised the overall contribution of his substitutes, who helped change the game after their introduction.
“I am very satisfied with the performance of the substitutes,” the Ajax coach added.
Arokodare joined Ajax from Wolves on a season-long loan in July as he looks to revive his career after struggling for regular opportunities in England.
