Amorim hails Fernandes’ impact after West Ham brace

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says it was crucial that Bruno Fernandes remained at the club this summer after the midfielder’s brace in a 2-1 pre-season win over West Ham.
Fernandes netted from the penalty spot before firing in a superb second goal from outside the box at the MetLife Stadium as United opened their U.S. tour with a win.
The 30-year-old Portugal international had considered a lucrative move to Saudi side Al Hilal in June but opted to stay at Old Trafford.
Amorim praised the captain’s decision, saying his influence on and off the pitch remains vital.
“It was so clear last season, the assists, the goals, the leadership. He’s our leader,” Amorim stated.
“Now we have more players to support him in that role, and that’s a good thing.”
Fernandes featured in a more advanced role against West Ham, with Amorim deploying Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte in midfield, while new signing Matheus Cunha joined Fernandes in the No. 10 positions.
