Amina Mohammed GCON (born 27 June 1961) is a Nigerian-British diplomat and politician who now serves as the 5th Deputy Secretary-General of the UN.

Previously, she served as Nigeria’s Minister of Environment from 2015 to 201 and was involved in the Post-2015 Development Agenda process. She is also Chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group.

Amina Jane Mohammed was born in Liverpool, England, on June 27, 1961, to a Fulani Nigerian veterinarian-officer and a British nurse.

She is the oldest of five daughters. Mohammed attended primary school in Kaduna and Maiduguri, Nigeria, and later The Buchan School on the Isle of Man.

She also attended Henley Management College in;1989, however,wever she does not hold a formal bachelor’s degree. After finishing her studies, her father demanded that she return to Nigeria.

Career

Between 1981 and 1991, Mohammed worked for Archcon Nigeria, an architectural design firm that collaborated with Norman & Dawbarn in the United Kingdom.

She formed the Afri-Projects Consortium in 1991 and remained as Executive Director until 2001. Mohammed supervised the United Nations Millennium Project’s Task Force on Gender and Education from 2002 to 2005.

Mohammed later served as the Nigerian President’s Senior Special Assistant on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In 2005, she was tasked with coordinating Nigeria’s debt relief money to accomplish the MDGs.

Her job includes developing a Virtual Poverty Fund with innovative approaches to poverty reduction, budget coordination and monitoring, as well as providing guidance on relevant subjects such as poverty, public sector reform, and sustainable

Amina Mohammed went on to become the founder and CEO of the Center for Development Policy Solutions, as well as an adjunct professor in Columbia University’s Master of Development Practice program.

During that time, she was a member of several international advisory boards and panels, including the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda and the Independent Expert Advisory Group on the Data Revolution for Sustainable Development.

She also served on the Advisory Board of UNESCO’s Global Monitoring Report on Education (GME).

Mohammed was a significant player in the Post-2015 Development Agenda process since 2012, when he was appointed Special Adviser to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Post-2015 Development Planning.

In this capacity, she served as a liaison between the Secretary-General, his High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons (HLP), the General Assembly’s Open Working Group (OWG), and other stakeholders.

She was also a member of the Secretary-General’s Independent Expert Advisory Group on the Data Revolution for Sustainable Development beginning in 2014.

From November 2015 to February 2017, Mohammed served as Federal Minister of Environment in President Muhammadu Buhari’s first cabinet.

During that period, she was Nigeria’s representative on the African Union (AU) Reform Steering Committee, which was chaired by Paul Kagame. She resigned from Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council on 24 February 2017.

Mohammed was accused by an advocacy organization in 2017 of issuing illegal permits to Chinese corporations to import endangered Nigerian timber while serving as Nigeria’s environment minister.

The Nigerian government has refuted the allegations. Mohammed met with US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman in 2022. In January 2017, UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced Mohammed’s appointment as Deputy Secretary-General.

She serves as a member of the UN Interagency Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (IACG).
