“Am I only good for…?” – Woman calls out Imam after being snubbed for mosque leadership role

A Nigerian Muslim woman has sparked reactions online after sharing how she felt sidelined by her Imam despite years of dedication and service at the mosque.

According to her, she is always the one washing the toilets, mopping the floors and cleaning the entire mosque environment.

She said the work is so stressful that she sometimes falls sick, yet she kept telling herself that she was doing the work of Allah.

In her words, she said:

“I fall sick sometimes because of how stressful it is. I will see pee and clean it, telling myself I am doing the Lord’s work. The day they said they wanted to select Iya Adini (mosque leader), I relaxed because I knew I deserved it.

I even thought my sister in Saudi would send me abaya for the ceremony. But they called names of Alhajas that sell clothes in Lagos Island. These people don’t even come to mosque regularly.”

She explained that when she asked what position she would be given, she was told she would be the one carrying the offering box to collect money during service.

The response left her questioning whether poor and committed members are only seen as labourers rather than leaders.

The lady argued that many of those selected rarely attend prayers and may not even recite the Qur’an properly, yet they were considered more suitable because of their status.

Her story has stirred debate, with many asking whether religious positions should be based on wealth and title or commitment and service.

Others encouraged her not to lose heart, reminding her that true reward comes from God, not man.
