Alonso ready for Liverpool job if Slot is axed – report

Xabi Alonso is reportedly prepared to take over at Liverpool should the club part ways with current manager Arne Slot at the end of the season.

Slot remains in charge for now, but a disappointing Premier League title defence has placed his position under increasing scrutiny, with internal discussions already pointing toward a possible managerial change this summer.

Liverpool eye structural reset

After winning the league in 2025, expectations were high, but performances have dipped significantly this season.

Despite heavy investment, including the signing of Florian Wirtz, Liverpool have struggled to deliver consistency, raising concerns at executive level.

Reports indicate that sporting leadership, led by Michael Edwards, has identified Alonso as a strategic fit to lead a squad rebuild.

The potential transition is also in line with the expected departure of Mohamed Salah, which could trigger a more tactical and personnel overhaul.

Alonso sets conditions

Alonso is understood to be open to negotiations but has outlined clear conditions regarding control over recruitment and squad planning.

This stance reflects lessons from his previous spell at Real Madrid, where limited influence reportedly impacted his tenure.

His camp, led by agent Inaki Ibanez, has confirmed interest from multiple clubs, but Liverpool remain a priority given Alonso’s historical ties to the club and familiarity with its structure.

Strategic timing in focus

Liverpool are currently chasing a top-four finish, sitting behind Aston Villa with limited games remaining.

However, Alonso is not expected to take over mid-season, preferring a clean transition window ahead of the next campaign.
