Akran of Badagry Dies at 89, Lagos Governor Sanwo-Olu Pays Tribute

The Akran of Badagry Kingdom, De Wheno Menu-Toyi, has died at the age of 89 after a brief illness, ending a nearly 49-year reign over the ancient town.
The revered monarch, a leading figure within the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, was widely respected for his wisdom, cultural advocacy, and contributions to the development of Badagry.
Governor Sanwo-Olu pays tribute
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu mourned the monarch’s passing, describing it as a significant loss to both Lagos State and Nigeria.
In a statement, he said, “On behalf of my wife, the government and people of Lagos, I commiserate with the people of Badagry, the deceased’s family, friends, associates and traditional institutions on the transition of the paramount ruler of Badagry Kingdom and Permanent Vice Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, Oba Babatunde Akran, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I. The death of Oba Akran is a great loss to the people of the ancient town of Badagry, and he will be greatly missed.”
Monarch’s 49-year reign ends
Menu-Toyi ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, and remained the Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs until his demise.
The governor highlighted the monarch’s role in promoting unity and preserving Badagry’s cultural heritage, adding that he had also fostered tourism and development in the town.
“Oba Akran served as a stabilising force within his kingdom, uniting diverse interests and using his position to attract growth and development. His legacy of wisdom, cultural preservation, and advocacy will be cherished by generations to come,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The state government urged the people of Badagry, the royal family, and associates to honour the late monarch’s legacy while praying for strength to bear the loss.
