AFCON: What Morocco coach said about Super Eagles players, Eric Chelle after 4–2 defeat

Morocco booked a place in the AFCON 2025 final on home soil after edging Nigeria 4–2 on penalties in a tense semi-final clash in Rabat.
The Atlas Lions needed spot-kicks to settle the contest after both sides failed to score across regulation time and extra time at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah.
Regragui hails unity and sacrifice
Head coach Walid Regragui praised his players and supporters, describing the win as a product of unity, sacrifice, and national pride.
“We received very touching messages, and they had a big impact on us. I am very proud of my players and our fans,” Regragui said.
The coach admitted his side endured a physically draining encounter but insisted the reward made the struggle worthwhile.
“We suffered a lot. Playing extra time consumed much energy, but reaching the final at home is a beautiful gift,” he added.
Praise for Super Eagles and Eric Chelle
Regragui also commended Nigeria for their discipline and fighting spirit throughout the match.
“I congratulate the Nigerian team and Coach Eric Chelle for the great work they have done,” he said.
Bounou the shoot-out hero
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the hero, saving penalties from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi during the shoot-out.
His interventions opened the door for Youssef En-Nesyri to score the decisive kick, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.
Man of the Match reaction
Reacting after the game, Bounou thanked the supporters and credited teamwork for the hard-earned victory.
“The atmosphere was wonderful. The match was very difficult, but the players did what was required,” he said.
Named TotalEnergies Man of the Match, Bounou praised Regragui’s preparation and his teammates’ commitment.
“The coach prepared us very well, and my teammates fought together. Our fans gave us extra motivation,” he added.
Focus turns to the final
Bounou said the team would quickly turn attention to recovery and final preparations.
“We will recover, prepare well and give our fans what they deserve,” he said.
Morocco will face Senegal in Sunday’s final in Rabat as they chase a second AFCON title.
The Atlas Lions last lifted the trophy in 1976, exactly 50 years ago.
