AFCON 2025: Uzoho declares readiness, speaks on ‘good’ relationship with Nwabali, Obasogie

Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has declared himself fully prepared to represent Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco following his recall to the national team.
The 27-year-old shot-stopper was the first player to report to Nigeria’s training camp in Cairo and has since been joined by Stanley Nwabali, Ademola Lookman, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Igoh Ogbu, Amas Obasogie and debut invitee Tochukwu Nnadi.
Uzoho last featured for Nigeria at the 2023 AFCON, where he made a brief appearance in the round-of-16 victory over Cameroon.

‘I missed the vibe in camp’
Speaking on his return, Uzoho said the recall brought a strong sense of excitement and relief.
“I missed the boys, I missed the vibe in the camp,” he said. “We chat and check up on each other. Being back with the group and representing Nigeria again is the most important thing for me.”
He described his inclusion in Eric Chelle’s final 28-man squad as a moment of deep personal satisfaction.
“I was filled with joy, joy I can’t really explain. It was relieving to know I’m back again with the boys and able to represent my country.”
Ready to step up if called upon
With first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali reportedly managing hand and ankle injuries, Uzoho could be called into action early in the tournament. The Omonia Nicosia keeper insisted he is mentally and physically prepared.
“Anybody called up to the national team is ready,” he said. “The technical crew know what they’re doing. If the country needs me, I’ll be ready.”
Goalkeeping unity in Super Eagles camp
Uzoho also dismissed any suggestion of rivalry within the goalkeeping department, stressing unity with fellow keepers Nwabali and Obasogie.
“Stanley is my brother, and I’ve worked with Amas before. We support each other. People outside may not see it, but there’s a good relationship among us.”
Nigeria have been drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda, and will open their AFCON campaign against Tanzania at the Fez Stadium on December 23.
