AFCON 2025: Super Eagles beat Algeria, reach semis

Nigeria booked a place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a controlled 2-0 victory over Algeria in Saturday’s quarter-final, setting up a high-profile clash with hosts Morocco.
The Super Eagles delivered a disciplined and efficient performance, with Victor Osimhen playing a decisive role by scoring once and providing an assist as Eric Chelle’s side extended their perfect record at the tournament.
First-half control without reward
Nigeria started on the front foot and created early pressure. Semi Ajayi headed over from a promising position, while Osimhen and Frank Onyeka both went close during a dominant opening spell.
Algeria gradually settled into the contest and began to press higher, but clear chances remained scarce.
The best opportunity of the first half fell to Osimhen midway through the period, only for Rayan Aït-Nouri to recover with a well-timed challenge.

Calvin Bassey later came close from a set piece, denied by a goal-line clearance, while Akor Adams missed a clear chance after being released by Alex Iwobi. The first half ended goalless despite Nigeria’s superiority.
Osimhen inspires decisive second half
The breakthrough arrived two minutes after the restart. Bruno Onyemaechi delivered a precise cross to the back post, where Osimhen rose unmarked to head Nigeria into the lead.
Algeria struggled to respond, and Nigeria maintained control of possession and territory.
The second goal followed after a well-worked team move. Iwobi split the Algerian defence with a forward pass to Osimhen, who opted against shooting and instead squared for Adams to round the goalkeeper and finish into an empty net.
Nigeria see out comfortable win
Algeria made multiple substitutions in an attempt to change the game, but Nigeria remained composed.
Adams struck the woodwork late on as the Super Eagles continued to threaten, while Algeria failed to register a meaningful response.
The win means Nigeria have now won all five of their matches at AFCON 2025. They will face Morocco in the semi-finals on Wednesday, January 14, as they continue their push for a fourth continental title.
