AFCON 2025: Osayi-Samuel confident Super Eagles will beat Algeria

Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has expressed confidence that Nigeria have the attacking quality to beat Algeria when both sides meet in Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final in Marrakech.

Nigeria enter the tie with a strong attacking record, having scored 12 goals in four matches, the highest tally at the tournament so far.

Algeria, by contrast, have built their campaign on defensive discipline, conceding just once en route to the last eight. The clash sets up a clear contrast in styles, with a semi-final place at stake.

Confidence in Nigeria’s attack

Speaking to reporters ahead of the game, Osayi-Samuel dismissed suggestions that Algeria’s defensive record should intimidate the Super Eagles.

He argued that Nigeria’s forward line has the tools required to break down any defence at the tournament.

“You are coming against the best strike force in Africa in my opinion, so we will try and get the job done,” the Birmingham City full-back said.

Nigeria’s attacking unit, led by Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, has consistently created chances and scored early goals, a pattern Osayi-Samuel believes will be crucial against the North Africans.

Focus on result and expectations

The defender also acknowledged the pressure from home, noting that the team understands the expectations of Nigerian supporters and the importance of the fixture.

“We take each game as they come. We know what’s at stake, we know Nigerians want us to win this game, and we will do all we can do to win,” he added.

Osayi-Samuel stressed that Nigeria’s objective is to decide the contest within regulation time, rather than allowing it drift into extra time or penalties.

“I think the aim is to make sure we don’t get there first, to try and win before penalties, even before extra times,” he said.

Respect for Algeria challenge

Despite his confidence, the defender was careful to acknowledge Algeria’s quality, describing them as a well-organised and technically sound side.

“Great team, very good team. They haven’t conceded, I watched the last game, they are very technical players,” Osayi-Samuel noted.

Nigeria and Algeria will face off at the Marrakesh Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 5 p.m., as both teams chase a place in the AFCON semi-finals.
