AFCON 2025 final: Morocco move to end 50-year curse against Senegal

Morocco will face Senegal in Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final knowing history, expectation and pressure are firmly on their shoulders as they chase a first continental title in 50 years.

The final, scheduled for the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, pits the tournament hosts against former champions in what is widely viewed as a clash between Africa’s two most complete teams.

Morocco are seeking only their second AFCON crown since lifting the trophy in 1976, while Senegal are aiming to reclaim the title they last won in Cameroon in 2021.

Morocco’s home advantage and long-term vision

The Atlas Lions arrive with the tournament’s best defensive record, having kept five clean sheets and conceded just once, a penalty, through goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Their run to the final has reignited belief that decades of heavy investment in football infrastructure could finally be rewarded at senior level.

Morocco’s rise has been deliberate. Significant spending on stadiums, academies and training facilities over the past 15 years has produced consistent success at youth and secondary levels, including Olympic bronze in 2024 and multiple African Nations Championship titles. Yet senior AFCON glory has remained elusive.

“We are waiting for this trophy for 50 years now,” defender Romain Saiss said. “It’s the dream of all Moroccans.”

Head coach Walid Regragui, part of the squad that lost the 2004 final, is under intense pressure to deliver on home soil after guiding Morocco to a historic World Cup semi-final in 2022.

Senegal’s experience and attacking threat

Standing in Morocco’s way is a Senegal side built on tournament know-how and attacking depth. The Teranga Lions booked their place in the final with a 1-0 win over Egypt, sealed by Sadio Mane, who also scored the decisive penalty in the 2021 final.

“A final is meant to be won,” Mane said, hinting this could be his last AFCON appearance.

Senegal have scored freely throughout the competition and boast multiple attacking options, including Nicolas Jackson, Ismaila Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye. However, they will be without captain Kalidou Koulibaly and midfielder Habib Diarra due to suspension.
