AFCON 2025: Liverpool confirm date for Salah release

Liverpool have confirmed that Mohamed Salah will not join Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) camp until December 15, keeping him available for the Premier League clash against Brighton on December 13.

Manager Arne Slot clarified that the winger will remain with the club for the fixture before departing the following day, despite Egypt’s earlier push to have him released in time for their warm-up match against Nigeria on December 14.

Slot addresses release talks

Slot said the decision was the product of coordinated discussions between all parties involved.

“It’s the 15th of December, but as always in these situations there is a player involved, there is the nation involved, and the club and there are always talks about what is best for all three of us,” he stated.

“I think the way we’ve worked at this club is there is communication between all three: the player, the club and the country.”

Liverpool prepare for lengthy absence

Salah is expected to miss up to six league games during AFCON, a longer stretch than usual due to the tournament’s shift to a December schedule that overlaps with England’s congested festive programme.

The 2025 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will run from December 21 to January 18.

Should Egypt progress deep into the tournament, Liverpool will be without their top scorer for key fixtures against Tottenham, Wolves, Leeds, Fulham, Arsenal, and Burnley.
