AFCON 2025: “I’m afraid, Nigeria scored a lot of goals in this competition” – Algeria captain jokes

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has playfully admitted feeling “afraid” ahead of his side’s crucial clash with Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON.
The winger, however, stressed that the Desert Foxes are ready for a demanding contest against a stronger and more attacking Super Eagles team.
Speaking during a pre-match press conference, Mahrez praised Nigeria’s quality and warned that Algeria must deliver a top performance to reach the semi-finals.
Mahrez hails Nigeria’s attacking strength
The former Manchester City star described the current Nigeria squad as more dangerous in attack than the team Algeria faced at AFCON 2019.
He noted that the Super Eagles have impressed with their goal-scoring form throughout the tournament.
“I’m afraid (laughs). They (Nigeria) scored a lot of goals in this competition.”
Mahrez added that Algeria cannot afford complacency, given the depth of talent in the Nigerian camp.
Expectation of a more open contest
Mahrez suggested the game would be more open than Algeria’s previous match against DR Congo.
He believes the expected openness could suit both teams’ attacking styles.
“We expect the next match to be more open, which will give us more space to showcase our abilities, and we must be fully prepared.”
No room for 2019 comparisons
The Algerian captain dismissed comparisons with the 2019 AFCON semi-final, where Algeria eliminated Nigeria.
He said the circumstances, players, and styles are completely different this time.
“This match against Nigeria will be very different from the one in 2019. That was in Egypt, with different players, a different style of play, and a different journey.”
Final AFCON motivation
Mahrez also confirmed that the 2025 tournament will be his last Africa Cup of Nations.
The 34-year-old admitted he is eager to end his international AFCON career with another title.
“This will be my last AFCON. I want to win the Africa Cup of Nations again with this generation; I really want it.”
Nigeria and Algeria will now battle for a place in the semi-finals, as two African heavyweights renew their rivalry on the continental stage.
