Adamawa Governor Fintiri dumps PDP, defects to APC

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fintiri made the announcement during a statewide broadcast on Friday, confirming that he and members of his cabinet, along with other PDP officials in Adamawa State, have moved with him to the APC.

The governor explained that his decision was taken in what he described as the developmental interest of the people of Adamawa State.

His defection significantly boosts the APC’s dominance, making him the 30th serving governor to join the ruling party in Nigeria’s political landscape — strengthening the APC’s control over the majority of the country’s states.

The move follows weeks of speculation that began after several lawmakers in the Adamawa State House of Assembly resigned from the PDP earlier this week amid internal party crises.

Fintiri’s shift comes amid a broader trend of high-profile defections ahead of the 2027 general elections, with other governors from Taraba, Kano and Plateau states also joining the ruling party in recent months.

Political analysts say the development could have far-reaching implications for both state and national politics as party strengths continue to shift ahead of upcoming elections.
