Adamawa ADC faction suspends Atiku, Babachir Lawal over alleged anti-party

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State has announced the suspension of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, along with two other prominent party members, over alleged anti-party activities and disobedience to a court order.
The announcement was made on Monday during a press briefing by the factional chairman in the state, Raji Zumo.
Also affected by the suspension are former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and Sadiq Ibrahim, who chairs the party’s transition committee.
Speaking during the press conference, which was shared in a video posted by Nigerian Affairs Journal, Zumo accused the suspended members of causing internal crisis within the party and ignoring a valid court ruling.
He stressed that the party’s constitution must be respected by all members, regardless of status or political influence.
“Let it be clearly stated, no individual, regardless of his status or influence, is above the law or the constitution of the African Democratic Congress, as long as he is a card-carrying member of the party.
“Gentlemen of the press, African Democratic Congress is built on discipline, justice, and the supremacy of law.
“In view of the foregoing and after executive consultation, the leadership of the ADC in Adamawa State hereby announces the immediate suspension of the following individuals from the party.
“One, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Waziri Adamawa; Engineer David Baba Lawal, Vice Chairman, North East; Barrister Sadiq Ibrahim Dasin, Transition Committee Chairman.
“Those individuals are suspended for their roles in fostering disunity, creating parallel structures, undermining lawful authority, and disregarding a subsisting court order.
“This action is taken in the best interest of the party to restore order, protect its dignity, and reaffirm our commitment to democratic values.”
The suspension comes amid an ongoing leadership tussle within the ADC at the national level, where rival factions continue to lay claim to control of the party structure.
One group led by Nafiu Bala Gombe is currently claiming the position of national chairman, further deepening the internal crisis.
The dispute has also been linked to disagreements involving former Senate President David Mark over the party’s national leadership arrangement.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier withdrawn recognition from a disputed leadership structure within the party due to the crisis.
Despite the internal tension, the faction aligned with David Mark insists the party remains stable and has confirmed that preparations for its national convention scheduled for Tuesday are still ongoing.
