Adam Lallana retires at 37

Former Liverpool and England international Adam Lallana has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37.

This ends a nearly 20-year career that spanned multiple top-flight clubs and international honours.

Lallana shared the news via an emotional Instagram post, reflecting on a journey that began at Southampton and fittingly ended at the same club.

“Southampton… the place where it all started, and fittingly where it ends. It’s the club I ultimately owe everything to,” he wrote.

The attacking midfielder made his professional debut in 2006 and amassed over 280 appearances for Southampton across two spells.

He played a key role in the club’s rise from League One to Premier League contenders and European participants.

Lallana transferred to Liverpool in 2014 for £25 million, going on to win the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League title in 2020.

He later joined Brighton & Hove Albion, where he spent four solid seasons before returning to Southampton in 2024.

In April 2025, he took temporary charge of the Saints following the sacking of Ivan Juric, as the club’s season spiraled towards relegation from the Premier League.

Despite the circumstances, Lallana’s leadership and history with the club provided a stabilizing presence.

On the international stage, Lallana earned 34 caps for England, describing each appearance as “the greatest honour.”

“I’m proud of the playing career I’ve had and have no regrets about any of it… I’m excited for whatever the future brings,” he added.
