Abia targets exit from National Grid as Government backs independent power plan

Governor Alex Otti has revealed plans to transition Abia State away from reliance on Nigeria’s national electricity grid, signaling a major shift in the state’s energy strategy.

According to the governor, efforts are already underway to secure alternative power solutions, with the state government supporting a private-sector-driven initiative aimed at delivering more stable and reliable electricity supply.

He noted that discussions are ongoing internationally as part of the plan to actualize the project.

The move, if successful, could position Abia as one of the few states in Nigeria to significantly reduce dependence on the national grid, which has long been criticized for inefficiency and frequent outages.

“My main target is to remove the entire Abia from the National grid. My Hon. Commissioner for Power is in the Netherlands negotiating for this. Even though it’s a private enterprise, we are ready to support it because it will benefit us all”
