Abia state government places 106-year-old Akara seller on monthly stipend

The Abia State government, under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti, has extended a compassionate hand to a resilient 106-year-old widow, Ma Chidinma Eluwa, who has been steadfastly selling akara.

The governor’s administration has taken steps to provide her with financial relief and support, recognizing her determination and dedication.

Ma Chidinma Eluwa, an inspirational figure in her community, has become well-known for her akara vending business along Owerri road in the Isigate area of Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.

Despite the challenges of her age and the hardships she has faced, including the loss of her husband and family, she has displayed remarkable tenacity by continuing her trade to cater to her loyal customers.

The Chief of Staff to the Abia State governor, Caleb Ajagba, first encountered Ma Chidinma Eluwa at her akara stand on July 29, 2023.

Impressed by her story and resilience, Ajagba brought her case to the attention of the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Vulnerable Groups and Poverty Alleviation.

After conducting thorough investigations into Ma Chidinma Eluwa’s history in the akara frying business, the Special Assistant, Mrs. Ifeoma Thomas, invited the elderly woman to her office.

During their meeting, Mrs. Thomas announced a series of measures to provide much-needed financial assistance and ensure the sustainability of Ma Chidinma Eluwa’s business.

The Abia State government has commenced a monthly stipend for Ma Chidinma Eluwa, acknowledging her contribution to the local economy and her determination to overcome adversity.

Additionally, recognizing the potential for growth, the government has taken steps to enhance her akara business further, empowering her to serve her customers more effectively.
