8 workers escape death in Lagos building collapse

Eight construction workers survived a terrifying ordeal after a four-storey building under construction collapsed in Alagomeji, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, on Friday evening.
The structure reportedly gave way around 8pm, trapping the workers under tonnes of rubble. Panic and chaos erupted as neighbors and passersby rushed to the scene, fearing the worst.

The incident sent shockwaves through the community. Many residents described hearing loud cracks and witnessing dust and debris fill the streets. “It all happened so fast. One moment the building was there, the next, it was on the ground,” said an eyewitness.
Authorities say all eight workers were adult males, engaged in various construction activities at the time. Fortunately, they were eventually rescued alive, though the extent of their injuries varied. The incident has once again highlighted concerns about building safety standards in Lagos.
Heroic rescue efforts
Emergency services responded swiftly, with personnel from the Lagos State Fire Service and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) leading the rescue. Teams worked tirelessly, navigating unstable debris to reach trapped victims. Rescue operations were described as painstaking and delicate to prevent additional collapses.
Eyewitnesses praised the bravery and professionalism of the emergency responders. One resident said, “We were worried that the building might collapse further, but the rescue team did an amazing job. They risked their lives to save others.” Rescue workers used specialized equipment to lift heavy slabs of concrete and carefully extract workers one by one.
After hours of intense effort, all eight trapped construction workers were pulled from the rubble alive. They were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. While some sustained minor injuries, others required more intensive care. Colleagues and onlookers expressed relief and gratitude at the successful rescue.
Investigation underway
The cause of the collapse is still unknown, and authorities have promised a thorough investigation.
Ogabi Olajide, Deputy Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed the building’s location at 333 Borno Way, Alagomeji, Ebute-Metta, and emphasized that all emergency measures had been deployed promptly.
Experts say that the incident raises questions about construction standards, adherence to safety regulations, and proper supervision of building sites. Lagos has seen a series of building collapses in recent years, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of construction codes.
Meanwhile, emergency responders continue clearing the debris to ensure no further casualties. Residents and officials alike are urging vigilance, warning that unsafe construction practices put countless lives at risk. The investigation is expected to determine the exact cause and hold those responsible accountable.
