2027: “One term enough for any ‘sincere leader’ to make impact” – Peter Obi

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said that a single four-year term is enough for any ‘sincere leader’ to make a meaningful impact in Nigeria.
Speaking through his spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, in Abuja on Monday, Obi noted that good governance does not require endless time in office, especially for a leader committed to positive change.
“One term is enough to show that good governance is possible. If bad leaders can damage the country in just two years, why can’t a serious leader fix things within four?” Obi questioned.
He stressed that a single term in 2027 would also honour the principle of zoning, which, though unwritten, has helped stabilise Nigeria’s political scene.
“I don’t need more than four years to set Nigeria in the right direction. Two years is enough to start turning things around for good. Nigerians deserve a president who truly cares and shows compassion,” he added.
Obi also confirmed his intention to run for the presidency again in 2027, expressing confidence in his qualifications for the role.
“I will contest for the office of President of Nigeria in 2027, and I am fully qualified to do so,” he declared.
On rumours suggesting he could become Atiku Abubakar’s running mate, Obi dismissed such claims, saying no such discussions have taken place.
“People assume many things, but nobody has ever talked to me about being A, B, or C in the next election,” he said.
Obi also addressed speculations about his loyalty to the Labour Party, following his support for a coalition that recently aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He clarified that he remains with Labour Party.
The former Anambra State governor defended his decision to work with individuals who served under past administrations, noting that their experiences both good and bad are valuable.
“Their experience matters. Even major companies hire people from failed organisations because they understand why those failures happened. We need people who know what can crash the system and how to avoid it,” he explained.
