2027 Election: Peter Obi set to join ADC, date emerges

Labour Party former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is set to officially join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A principal official of the party disclosed this in Abuja, revealing that Obi has allegedly concluded plans to defect and will make his declaration at a rally scheduled for December 31 in Enugu, the political capital of the South-East.
According to the source, Obi’s supporters and loyalists have already begun arrangements ahead of the planned declaration.
The official further disclosed that about three weeks ago, after the ADC asked Obi to make up his mind about joining the coalition, the former Anambra State governor met with the party’s National Chairman, David Mark, to renew his allegiance.
It was gathered that the party’s stance and internal arrangements may have convinced Obi to finally take the step.
Earlier, on December 7, the ADC had publicly reacted to a statement credited to Obi in which he described the party as unstable, urging him to clearly decide whether or not he wanted to join the coalition.
Speaking with Punch, the party source said,
“We are aware that Peter Obi is making plans to declare for the ADC on December 31 in Enugu. Although he has yet to formally inform the party, the plans are genuine.”
When asked why Obi would choose Enugu instead of Anambra State for his declaration, the official explained that the move was strategic.
“Enugu is the political capital of the South-East. Obi is representing the region, not just his state. That must have informed his decision.”
If confirmed, Peter Obi’s defection to the ADC could significantly reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, especially in the South-East and among his loyal support base.
