2026 WCQ: Rohr talks tough, banks on insider knowledge ahead of Super Eagles clash
Benin Republic coach Gernot Rohr says his familiarity with several Super Eagles players could give his side an edge when both teams clash in Uyo for their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Rohr reflects on his time with Nigeria
Rohr, who managed Nigeria between 2016 and 2021, revealed that many of the current squad members began their international careers under his watch.
He said he was responsible for giving Victor Osimhen, Semi Ajayi, Frank Onyeka, Samuel Chukwueze, Zaidu Sanusi, and Terem Moffi their first call-ups to the national team.
“I know this team well. I made Troost-Ekong captain after Obi Mikel and called Osimhen for the first time,” Rohr told L’Équipe.
“I still know Iwobi, Ndidi, Simon, Chukwueze… It will be a fantastic moment. We were greatly underestimated, but we remain the underdogs.”
Benin sit top of Group C
Following South Africa’s draw against Zimbabwe and subsequent point deduction for fielding an ineligible player, Benin currently sit top of Group C, heading into Tuesday’s high-stakes encounter.
‘We hold the cards’
Rohr, who has faced Nigeria three times since taking charge of Benin, with one win, one draw, and one loss, insists his team is ready to rise to the occasion.
“It will be a match to experience and not forget. It will take a feat, but we hold the cards,” he said confidently.
The clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, promises to be a tense battle as both sides vie for a ticket to the 2026 World Cup in North America.
