17-year-old girl fakes kidnap, extorts N500,000 from mother in Delta

The Delta State Police Command has reported a shocking case involving a 17-year-old girl who allegedly connived with friends to fake her own kidnapping and extort N500,000 from her mother.
The teenager reportedly used the money to buy clothes, leaving her hardworking mother, who relies on farming for a living, devastated.
“She connived with her friends, faked her own kidnap, and extorted a ransom of N500,000 to buy cloth from her innocent mother who does farming jobs in the village to feed,” the police said in a statement.
Authorities emphasised the importance of proper upbringing and parental guidance to prevent similar incidents in the community.
“Train your children, so they don’t end up becoming a problem to you and the society,” the Delta State Police Command warned.
Parenting and vigilance
Police urged parents to pay close attention to their children’s activities and social circles, noting that early intervention and guidance are key to preventing youths from engaging in criminal or deceitful behaviour.
Social implications
The case has sparked debate about the role of parental supervision in rural and urban areas, highlighting how easily children can be misled into dangerous schemes without proper values and education.
