“Main goal is to win AFCON” – Peseiro gives reason for accepting wage cut

Peseiro's deal with the NFF had initially expired in June, but he signed a new short-term deal during the summer, which included a reduction in his salary.

Coach Jose Peseiro has revealed that it was his faith in his players to win 2024 AFCON that made him accept pay cut from the NFF.

The Super Eagles head coach has extended his contract with the Nigeria national team. Peseiro’s deal with the NFF had initially expired in June, but he signed a new short-term deal during the summer, which included a reduction in his salary.

Meanwhile, he has come out to confirm that his decision to take a lower wage was influenced by his players’ strong desire to bring home the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Peseiro shared, “The players pushed me to stay because they believe we can win (the AFCON). We can win it. The players know it.

“They come with the same energy, the same belief, to fight for the Super Eagles,” he added.

While Peseiro and his players are determined to win the tournament, they are also well aware of the huddles ahead.

“The main goal is to win the AFCON. We will need to be at our maximum because we know that there is good opposition.

“There is Senegal, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, and Ivory Coast. But we believe we can do it. I believe. And the players believe,” the Portuguese gaffer added.
