Inter Milan edge Genoa 2-1 to extend lead in Serie A title race

Inter Milan continued their fight towards the Serie A title with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Genoa on Monday night.

Kristjan Asllani’s early strike and a contentious penalty converted by Alexis Sanchez proved enough for the Nerazzurri to secure all three points.

The victory extends Inter’s winning streak to 12 matches in 2024, while making them the favourites at the top of the table, now 15 points clear.

This win was particularly significant as it came on the back of Juventus’ defeat to Napoli, providing Inter with an extra boost in their title quest.

Despite missing key players like Alessandro Bastoni, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Juan Cuadrado due to suspension or injury, Inter maintained control for much of the match.

However, Genoa, who had lost only one of their last 11 Serie A games, put up a strong fight but fell short at the end of the day.

The game was not without controversy, as Inter’s second goal came from a penalty decision that was highly debated.

The referee awarded a penalty to Inter after Nicolò Barella was brought down in the box, a decision that was upheld after a VAR review.

Genoa managed to pull one back through a fine Johan Vasquez volley, but Inter held on to secure the victory.
