EPL: Jonny Evans rejoins Manchester United on one-year deal

Manchester United have completed the permanent signing of defender and former academy graduate Jonny Evans on a one-year deal.

The 35-year-old began training with his former club following his release from Leicester City at the end of June, and he penned a short-term deal at Old Trafford to allow him to feature during pre-season.

Speaking to Manchester United website, Johnny Evans said;

“I am delighted to join Manchester United, a place which has always felt like home. This club and the fans have shaped me as a player and as a person since I was 15 years old, and I am delighted to be back where it all began as part of this talented squad.

“I’ve really enjoyed working under the manager and his coaching staff since the start of pre-season, and I’m looking forward to helping this group achieve success together at this fantastic football club.”

Evans made 198 appearances during his first spell at Old Trafford, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League, two League Cups, four Community Shields and the Club World Cup.

The Northern Ireland international will boost a defence which has recently lost Raphael Varane to a muscular issue, potentially for the next six weeks or so.

Evans is United’s third deadline day signing after the arrivals of Turkey goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and Spanish full-back Sergio Reguilon, and it’s been reported that the club has agreed a deal with Fiorentina for Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.

His signing raises fresh question marks regarding the future of Harry Maguire, who has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and been linked with a move away all summer.
