EPL: Brighton agree club record fee for Ajax star Mohammed Kudus

Brighton have reached an agreement in principle with Ajax for the transfer of Ghanaian footballer, Mohammed Kudus.

Asides from Brighton, Kudus has been linked to Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea in this transfer window after a terrific season for Ajax where he recorded 18 goals and got seven assists across all competitions.

This is coming after he caught the eye at the Qatar World Cup, scoring two goals in the group stage for Ghana.

Before now, it seemed Chelsea were leading the race for his signature, given that Arsenal need to trim their squad before making new signings and United have been focusing on other positions, though Erik ten Hag remains a big fan of his former player.

The Seagulls have now overtaken all the clubs linked to the Ghanaian footballer by meeting Ajax’s asking price of €40m (£34.5m). The deal will surpass Brighton’s current club record move set earlier this summer when Joao Pedro completed his £30 million move from Watford.

The Athletic reported that Mohammed Kudus is now poised to move to Brighton subject to personal terms and a medical.

The midfielder has spent three seasons with Ajax, scoring 16 goals in 63 Eredivisie matches. He has also notched seven times in 24 appearances for Ghana, including two at the World Cup last winter. Kudus will represent a huge profit for the Dutch side after Ajax spent £8m to land him from FC Nordsjaelland in 2020.

So far this summer, Brighton have landed Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht for £16m with James Milner and Mahmoud Dahoud also arriving on a free transfer. The Seagulls have so far resisted offers from Chelsea for Moises Caicedo, who has been a leading light at the Amex and would command a huge fee were he to leave.
