Serie A: Jose Mourinho offers Mason Greenwood ‘career lifeline’
AS Roma Coach, Jose Mourinho is leading a shocking move for Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood this summer.
Recall that 21-year-old Greenwood was suspended by the Red Devils in January 2022 after he was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. Police confirmed in February that Greenwood “no longer faces criminal proceedings” as the Crown Prosecution Service had dropped all charges.
United have carried out an investigation into the allegations themselves and are weighing up restoring Greenwood to Erik ten Hag’s first-team squad. The investigation is expected to uncover whether he brought the club into disrepute and was in breach of his contract.
The 21-year-old’s future remains uncertain as United coach Erik ten Hag is reported to be against the club selling him, meaning he could be sent out on loan.
The English footballer has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford and Roma are the latest club to have shown interest in the England international.
The Sun reported that Jose Mourinho reached out to Mason Greenwood over the prospect of joining Roma on loan.
Quoting a “source”, The Sun reported that Mourinho told both Greenwood and his father, that the “best way out of his current situation” is to start playing football.
Juventus, Inter, and AC Milan have also been linked with Greenwood in the past few months. Mourinho played a central role in Greenwood’s early United career, having picked the then 16-year-old for United’s pre-season tour in the US back in 2018.
Greenwood eventually signed his first professional contract with Manchester United in the months that followed, frequently training with the senior side and was included in the match day squad for a Champions League group stage clash with Valencia.
